The everyday care of carpets should include regular vacuuming taking care to avoid sucking up the fringes. It is also important to remember to vacuum under the rug as well. A vigorous shaking or beating over a washing line once or twice a year is also beneficial.
When cleaning your carpet the first step is to test it for color fastness by taking a slightly damp white cotton rag and gently rubbing the colored areas.
Prepare a bucket of warm water with carpet or baby shampoo or a natural cleaning solution such as soapwort and a tablespoon of vinegar to prevent the colors from running. (NB. Never use detergents or harsh chemicals.) Use a soft brush with natural bristles and gently apply solution to the rug firstly in vertical strokes then horizontally taking care not to wet the carpet too much. Lay the carpet on a hard flat surface to dry naturally.
An alternative if you live in an area with snow is to lay the carpet pile down in virgin snow. Pat it gently and walk on it, then remove the carpet and you will see all the dirt has stayed in the snow.
To remove stains from carpets the most important thing is to act immediately.
General: Dab the area with a dry absorbent cloth. Then gently clean as above.
Oil: Add some salt, wait a while then add some lemon juice.
Wine: Use a mixture of white vinegar and a little water. |
