It is color and the way it is shaped by pattern that gives kilims and carpets their abstract beauty. The dyes used in carpet making come from a variety of natural sources.

Reds
Madder Root (a wild perennial), cherry and pomegranate skins, roots of roses, rhubarb and apricots, tulip petals and the cochineal insect.

Blues
Indigo and egg-plant (aubergine) skin

Yellows
Safflower petals and buds, lemon and pomegranate rinds, onion skins, saffron, turmeric, leaves of apricot, apple willow and wild pistachio trees.

Orange
Grass roots, bark of plum trees or madder-dyed yarn dipped into a boiled solution of pomegranate husks, poplar or willow leaves.

Greens
Walnut and olive trees, sweet violet or a double dying of yellow with indigo.

Browns & Blacks
Tea, tobacco, mud, soot, leaves of wild pistachio or walnut bark in combination with ferrous sulphate
