The production of carpets and kilims is an ancient art form which originated from necessity. The people of Anatolia lived a nomadic lifestyle and used kilims and carpets for all their every day needs; tents, wall coverings, floors, doors, baby cradles, blankets, grain bags etc. In modern times however, as a more settled lifestyle began the function of carpets and kilims has changed to one of decoration and beauty.
In history, carpets were always an important part of a brides dowry. Each piece made by the bride embodied the inheritance of family traditions and tribal folklore. The number of carpets, as well as their workmanship was an indication of the family’s wealth.Kilims and carpets helped to carve the identity of villages and nomadic tribal groups. This individuality, which involves designs, motifs and colours specific to individual villages or tribes, can still be seen in the carpets produced today |
